The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
The BACP gives brief outlines of many different kinds of therapy available here, and also has a download on “How to get the best out of your therapist” here.

The British Psychological Society
The BPS is the representative organisation for psychology and psychologists in the UK, and is currently the national body which registers and regulates all chartered psychologists. Their website provides some free advice leaflets here on depression, eating disorders, panic disorder, phobias, self-harm and trauma.

The Centre for Clinical Intervention
This is an Australian Department of Health website which has some useful and straightforward self-help information and worksheets here on depression, bi-polar disorder, panic attacks, worrying, self-esteem, procrastinating, assertiveness and eating disorders.

The Clinical Knowledge Summaries Service
This is an NHS website, which gives up-to-date basic information here on a wide range of mental health problems.

Get Connected
This is a London-based charity providing a free confidential helpline, email and webchat service for young people across the UK, as well as a good online directory to many other services available.

Depression Alliance
This charity supports local self-help groups across England, Scotland and Wales, provides downloadable leaflets, and a host of further information and links.

Glasgow STEPS
This NHS website has a great deal of information on stress and related difficulties, and many free downloads here of booklets, audio and video materials, on topics such as relaxation, anxiety, anger, sleep, post-natal depression, and many more. Their free audio resources provide two relaxation guides (a male voice), and interesting 5-8 minute discussions on a wide range of topics including mental health issues from several different religious and spiritual viewpoints. Many of their booklets also suggest further reading/online resources which you may find helpful.

gURL.com
This US teen-oriented website is somewhat byte-heavy (for Susan's middle-aged computer) as it carries a lot of advertising links, but gives comprehensive and sound factual information about any and every possible teenage interest and concern, and has well-moderated question and answer and chat boards.

Mental Health America
Another US website, a nonprofit organization, giving good basic information here from an American perspective.

Mind
Mind is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales and has excellent online information covering many many different topics here, from Addiction to Yoga, including explanations of terms used, descriptions of a range of medical, psychological and other therapies, information on issues for diverse black and minority ethnic groups, and booklets translated into some 20 different languages.

The National Sleep Foundation
This US nonprofit organization gives comprehensive information on sleep issues and many related matters.

No Panic
This established charity offers support for sufferers of panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, general anxiety disorder and tranquilliser withdrawal. They run a telephone helpline in the UK, Republic of Ireland and France, and also run telephone recovery and written recovery programmes and offer a wealth of other information and resources.

Rethink
This is another established UK charity (it used to be known as the National Schizophrenia Fellowship). Their website offers free information downloads on many matters relating to mental illness, including diagnoses, medication and other treatments, social and legal issues, and sources of support both for those suffering from mental illness, and those caring for them.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists
This website has information here on a wide range of issues, such as alcohol and drug problems, eating issues, anxiety, phobias, bereavement, depression, learning disabilities, manic depression/bipolar disorder, dementia, obsessive compulsive disorder, personality disorder, schizophrenia, and more. There is also information in 14 different languages.

The Samaritans
If you are in crisis, feeling very distressed and despairing, and need to talk to someone urgently, you can telephone the Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90. You can also contact them by emailing jo@samaritans.org, or find your local branch and arrange to meet someone face to face.

Uncommon Knowledge
This is a British commercial website which offers a range of products for sale, but which also has some excellent free articles here on many different issues and difficulties, such as smoking, being bullied, relationships, men's and women's emotions, hypnosis, post-traumatic stress, self-confidence, and many other topics. There is also some free on-line self help material available here.
